The historic cottage was the second house restoration under the CHDO grant program with the Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF). The house has an important presence in the Carver Park neighborhood, having provided multiple programs over time.

In the mid-20th century, the structure served as a meeting place and recreation center for African American Galvestonians. A storefront and commercial space were added to the house. This addition seriously altered the appearance and the ability to use the house. The facade was removed, the front porch and foundation rebuilt, and the entire house rehabilitated.
