JACK JOHNSON PARK

JACK JOHNSON PARK

NEW BUILD
PUBLIC
COMPLETED 2012

This small, quarter-block park is dedicated to the first African American heavyweight boxing Champion, a Galveston native. It is located adjacent to the Old Central High School, Galveston’s Historic African-American school and community center. Easterwood Architects Studio provided facilitation with the park committee to generate the park design, and it has been often used for public, community events since completion. The park takes it’s scaled down character from the meandering walks of nearby Kempner Park, and preserved existing live oaks onsite, while quietly allowing the celebration of the boxer in cast bronze. Park elements also include a small pavilion and stage, seating berm, landscape beds and space for future picnic canopies.
